  • More Sew to Go

Posted on 08/10/2013 by David in My Handmade Closet.

Now we’re well into the last three months of the year – which are certainly more conducive to indoors activities – I’m taking a moment to concentrate on sewing projects I’d like to complete before reaching the end of 2013.

    • Nautical Trousers

Out of season? Maybe. Out of fashion? Never! It’s been a little while I’ve had this project on my mind but never quite knew how to combine those three fabrics together. I think I’ve finally cracked it and I should finish them by the end of this week.

    • Birthday Dress

This is a present for my BFF Nadia whose birthday is fast approaching but so far, I’ve only managed to purchase the fabric. It was meant to be an evening dress but somehow, after I texted Nadia countless numbers of fabrics while in a fabric store and sifting through the Yeses, Nos and Maybes, we kind of lost track of the original goal and settled for this fabric instead (including a piece of light pink fabric which I may use for some piping):

It’s gorgeous, isn’t? And it’s georgette… rather springy/summery but what really matters is that Nadia loves it. I’m currently drafting a basic dress block as I have a clear idea of the design Nadia wants and, Japanese cushions aside, this will be my first foray into the silk/crepe fabric territory. Pretty exciting really!

    • Vogue Pattern V8940

I recently purchased this pattern and received it yesterday! This is rather a case of 2 projects into one pattern (trousers + jacket) and I am looking forward to it as much as I am dreading it. V8940 is the latest men’s Vogue pattern released this summer and considered an advanced project. I know I’ve done quite a few pairs of trousers this year but never from a commercial pattern. The time seems right though for me to leave my “comfort zone” and tackle a different pattern that will allow me to think through any fitting issues. Not sure I share the same optimism for the jacket as I am literally stepping into the unknown with that one. But this has to be done and there ”ain’t no mountain high enough, ain’t no river wide enough”… to keep me from doing this project, baby…Yes you get the idea; I really do need a warm jacket for this winter!

That’s all I can think of for now but I’m hoping to make more time for a couple of extra projects here and there before reaching the end of the year. Anything in particular you want to see made? I’m open to suggestions!

Vogue trouser and jacket? Jump on it. You will not fail.

I can’t wait to see the nautical trousers. I am sure they will be inspiring. I have a Vogue jacket pattern, but not sure I am up to it, so it will be a learning experience to see what you have to say about making a coat.

I will try and give that jacket a good go, still have to find a suitable fabric though. Nautical trousers nearly finished, let’s hope they live up to your expectations Wil 🙂

The jacket looks interesting. I have seen people mention that pattern before but I would be interested in reading about your experiences making it, since I haven’t seen anyone do it yet.
